Common Ground: Principles and Applied Instances in Mediated Dialog, and Future System Design Concerns

1. Abstract This paper focuses on two problems related to establishing common ground in different modes of communication. The paper reviews publications that explore grounding with relation to humanhuman interaction, in both verbal interaction and common grounding in vision based interaction. With verbal and vision as the first level premise, this paper also discusses issues on grounding that can be classified into Shared Visual Fields, Computer mediated and Face-toFace focus groups, and dialogue( for human-human and human-computer interaction). Finally we try to use theories established in the above areas to construct a preliminary issues in grounding with respect to social and large scale social interaction systems.
